Added Value. The current courses being run locally involve a wide range of partners: Local Authority (UpBeat and facilities staff), PCT (wellbeing@work, Healthy Living Partnership and 5 A DAY), and, Sure Starts. Overweight and obesity are multifactorial and require a multifactorial approach. The course’s aim is to tackle overweight and obesity in the short term through advice on diet, physical activity, behaviour modification and support. Other lifestyle issues including, alcohol and smoking are also addressed through the same course using the same methods of goal setting, advice, behaviour modification and support. All lifestyle issues are also addressed in the long term through empowering participants to self manage and all are encouraged to form support groups and networks, thereby addressing issues of social capital. Defined by ▇▇▇▇▇▇ as ‘features of social life such as networks, norms and social trust that facilitate co-ordination and co operation for mutual benefit.’ Social capital includes social resources such as friends and neighbours. These weight management courses will be targeted in the areas of greatest deprivation and greatest need as income inequality acts against social capital, social cohesion and integration, and, these are correlated with mortality. Evidence demonstrates that social support and social capital are related to health status and living in a supportive neighbourhood and having a large social network promotes better health and health related behaviours. Overweight and obesity is a public health problem and the PCT Public Health team has been leading on the OCN training, accreditation and support for the current deliverers of the weight management courses. Although the PCT is leading on this target all LAA partners have the responsibility to achieve it, as is the case with the HM Treasury PSA target 2005-08 (Joint target for DoH, DfES, DCMS): Tackle the underlying determinants of ill health and health inequalities by halting the year-on-year rise in obesity among children under 11 by 2010 in the context of a broader strategy to tackle obesity in the population as a whole. The PCT are the main training and support arm for the deliverers of the weight management course intervention (including the PCT). UpBeat are currently the main deliverers through a SLA the PCT has with the Local Authority; however, to achieve these targets there will need to be involvement in this area with Primary Care.
