Desired Results. The primary public health benefit is providing and assisting low income individuals with serious psychiatric disabilities to maintain safe, affordable, supportive permanent housing. This prevents people from homelessness or institutional placement, and improves their quality of life. Federal law requires public mental health systems to provide services in integrated community settings, and Permanent Supportive Housing is a proven approach for doing so. It presents an alternative to hospitals, shelters, and other settings that segregate people by disability, such as nursing homes, board and care homes, and other residential care facilities, in which residency is tied to receiving the particular services the facility offers. Once an individual achieves a higher level of recovery and no longer meets the medical necessity criteria, only with resident consent, Interim will work on locating other sources of permanent housing.
