LIDAR Method: Comprehensive Model Selection. The methods described here for evaluating the performance of the canopy height metric were also used for Stand Density, Basal Area, and Diameter. Two standard forestry height metrics for plots are the mean plot height, and ▇▇▇▇▇’▇ height, a basal area weighted height that allows larger trees to affect the height more than smaller trees. Mean height and ▇▇▇▇▇’▇ height were calculated for each plot from the field data for live, large (diameter >= 5”), hardwoods and softwoods. Linear regression models for both height metrics were developed for this project.
