Mulching Clause Samples
The Mulching clause defines the requirements and standards for applying mulch to designated areas within a project. It typically specifies the type, depth, and placement of mulch, as well as the timing and methods for its installation, such as using organic or inorganic materials around plants or landscaped zones. This clause ensures that mulching is performed consistently and effectively, promoting soil moisture retention, weed suppression, and overall landscape health.

Mulching. A. Contractor shall maintain mulch at a depth of at least two inches after settling. When additional mulch is necessary, Contractor should present a separate bid for approval.
B. The use of mulches made from sustainable materials such as recycled hardwood mulch, Melaleuca trees, Eucalyptus, pine needles, and pine bark is recommended. Contractor shall not use Grade B cypress mulches made from whole-tree wood.
C. Contractor shall apply mulch to bedded areas and around trees and palms. Contractor shall leave a 2-inch space between the trunks of plants and the mulch. Contractors shall mulch within at least a 12 to 18-inch radius from the trunk for any size of tree.
D. Contractor shall apply new mulch in a level profile consistent with pre-existing grades so that the final uniform mulch depth comprised of both existing and new layers will be a minimum of 2 inches, but will not exceed 3 inches. Contractor shall not apply new mulch material against trunks or plant stems but will taper down to the soil at those locations. In all locations where the existing mulch bed is in contact with a paved surface (i.e., sidewalks, roadway edges, or curbing and driveways), Contractor shall lightly trench the mulch-hard surface bed line to better contain the existing and applied mulch.
E. Contractor shall rake or sweep mulch off paved areas and turfgrass into beds as the mulch application progresses. Contractor shall rake smooth any mounded areas so that depth does not exceed 3 inches.
F. If mulch is installed improperly, Contractor shall correct any problems at no additional charge to Owner.
Mulching. The Contractor shall provide the materials and labor to replenish mulching materials consistent with those now existing in and around plants, trees and shrub beds at all areas covered by this Agreement. Delivery of mulch shall be coordinated so that it is not dumped on natural or turf areas. Mulch should be maintained to a depth of approximately 2-4 inches. Replacement mulch may be added to existing materials so long as the total mulch layer does not exceed approximately 4 inches. Where there are drainage problems or wetter soil conditions, a thinner layer of mulch shall be used. Mulch shall be pulled away from the base of trees and shrubs to expose the stem and root- flare and not contribute to plant damage. Mulch shall be placed so that smaller plants, perennials, and groundcovers are not completely covered by mulch. This replenishment shall be accomplished twice per year, once in February and once in October while this Agreement is in effect. Mulching shall be done in a manner consistent with the standards found in the Town’s Design and Development Manual. Acceptable Mulch Types and Descriptions: • Hardwood Mulch – Triple shredded hardwood mulch. • Long-Leaf Pine Straw Mulch – Clean and free of twigs, branches, pine cones, and inert material. Use should be limited to areas planted with acid-loving plants.
Mulching. The contractor shall clear a circular path (tree ring) around the base of all replacement trees. This path will have a radius of three (3) feet, measured from the base of the tree. This ring shall be cleared of all growth and debris, delineated with landscape edging (to hold the mulch in place), and filled with mulch. When replacing plants, a three inch layer of mulch must be maintained at all times in the bed areas.
Mulching. All landscape areas, other than seeded areas, shall be mulched to reduce erosion, lessen weed germination and growth, and inhibit water loss from the soil. Mulch shall be broken corncobs, wood chips, chopped bark, size No. 5 gravel, or crushed stone, in accordance with the Department’s standards. Wood chip mulch shall be placed per the Department’s standards in all plant basins. Mulch shall not contain anything that would inhibit growth of the replacement plantings. Mulch shall be capable of matting together to resist scattering by the wind. Developer may shred or grind any on-site woody plant material for use as mulch, as long as the species present do not produce growth-inhibiting substances that might jeopardize the new plantings. The stockpiling of mulch shall be carefully planned to prevent combustion from generated heat.
Mulching i. The Proposer shall supply mulch. Mulch shall be hemlock bark, shredded medium grind size, free of noxious weed seed, debris, and all foreign material. Other material may be approved at the discretion of the City.
ii. Mulch shall be applied to newly planted trees. Lay mulch down in a uniform 3-inch-thick layer, 3 inches away from the tree trunk, around the tree to the outer edge of the berm. If a berm is not required, due to a planting strip 4 feet or less wide, the mulch shall be applied to the edge of the planting strip or cutout.
Mulching. A three inch layer of mulch must be maintained at all times in the bed areas. The cost for mulch, including labor, equipment and incidentals shall be included on the unit price for Maintenance of Planted Beds.
Mulching. Hold mulch in place by light disking, a very thin covering of topsoil, asphalt binder, or other adhesive material approved by the Engineer. Where mulches have been secured by the asphalt binder method, it will not be permissible to walk on the slopes after the binder has been applied. In application of asphalt binder material, take every precaution to guard against damaging or disfiguring structures or property on or adjacent to the areas worked. Any damage resulting from operations will be repaired at no cost to the Owner.
Mulching. Where applicable, plant areas shall be cultivated and mulched at all times with a minimum of two-inch depth and a maximum of four-inch depth when allowed to maintain plant vitality. Contractor shall maintain all mulch/ground cover areas and add as needed. Contractor shall notify District when mulch is needed. District will provide mulch to contractor for use.
Mulching. Mulch is provided as an additional service. Company will provide this service for mulching upon Customer request at an additional cost. All beds or otherwise bare ground areas and tree rings should be maintained with a layer of mulch sufficient to cover the bare ground and prevent weeds.

B. If binder is ordered, spray all mulched surfaces with asphalt binder material so surface has a uniform appearance. Binder shall be uniformly applied to mulch at rate of approximately 8.0 gallons per 1,000 square feet, with a minimum of 6.0 gallons and a maximum of 10.0 gallons per 1,000 square feet depending on the type of mulch and the effectiveness of the binder securing it. Bituminous binder material may be sprayed on the mulched slop areas from either the top or the bottom of the slope. Use pump and air compressor of adequate capacity to insure uniform distribution of the bituminous material.
