Natural attrition Clause Samples

The Natural Attrition clause defines how reductions in personnel or resources occur through normal, voluntary departures rather than forced layoffs or terminations. In practice, this means that when employees leave a company due to retirement, resignation, or other natural causes, their positions may not be filled, thereby gradually reducing headcount without formal redundancy processes. This clause helps organizations manage workforce size in a less disruptive manner, minimizing the need for involuntary separations and associated costs or morale issues.

A position may be considered redundant for genuine operational reasons of an economic, technological, structural or similar nature, including, but not limited to: a) management initiated changes to the structure of an element which significantly affect the duties of a position; b) a decision to cease offering or to vary the academic content of any course or program or combination or mix of courses or programs conducted on one or more campuses; c) financial exigency within an organisational unit or cost centre; d) changes in technology or work methods; and which results in the work of the position or a major portion of it, being no longer required to be performed. For a position to be a bona fide redundancy it must cease to exist and there can be no plans to fill the position in the foreseeable future.
