These symptoms are associated with poor prognosis and have a profound impact on the quality of life and return to productivity of these patients. Cachexia is the result of an imbalance between energy intake and energy expenditure and both mechanisms are thought to be affected in the setting of cancer. Current evidence suggests that a proinflammatory state may be responsible for many of the symptoms associated with cancer (1-4). Cytokines are increased in cancer-cachexia patients. IL-6 administration in rodents (5) and humans (6) reduces body weight, increases the resting metabolic rate and suppresses appetite.
