Common use of Sabbatical Clause in Contracts

Sabbatical. Teachers who have been employed for seven (7) consecutive years by the Board may, upon request, be granted a sabbatical leave for teacher improvement of up to one (1) year. It is agreed that teacher improvement includes: attending a college, university or other educational institution, which will improve the teacher's ability to teach and taking a minimum of six (6) semester credits each semester. During said sabbatical leave, the teacher shall be considered to be in the employ of said Board, shall have a contract, and shall be paid one half his/her full salary. The Board shall not be liable for death or injuries sustained by any teacher while on sabbatical leave. The full medical insurance benefits will be paid by the employee. Teachers on sabbatical leave shall be allowed credit toward retirement for time spent on such leave in accordance with the rules and regulations established by the Michigan Public School Employees Retirement Funds. While on sabbatical leave, seniority shall accrue. Upon returning from sabbatical leave, the non-tenure eligible staff member shall be restored to the same position or to a position of like nature and be placed on the salary schedule as the non-tenure eligible staff member would have been if he/she worked in the district during the sabbatical period. The placement process for tenure eligible staff members shall be governed by Board policy and corresponding administration guidelines. Provided there are enough people who qualify for sabbatical leaves and apply for such leaves, the Board may grant three (3) such leaves per year with half pay to the teacher. Teachers granted a sabbatical leave will be required to sign a personal contract agreeing to return to the School District for the year immediately following the leave. Failure to return to the School District will require the teacher to repay to the School District with interest (be determined upon granting of leave) the amount of pay they received while on leave.

Sabbatical. Teachers who have been employed 1. Requests for seven (7) consecutive years a sabbatical must be received by the Superintendent in writing in such form as may be required by the Board may, upon request, be granted a no later than April 15 of the year proceeding the school year in which the sabbatical leave for teacher improvement of up to one (1) yearis requested. It is agreed understood that the deadline of April 15 may be waived at the discretion of the Superintendent when fellowships, grants, or scholarships awarded later in the year make such a deadline unreasonable. 2. The maximum sabbatical salary shall be paid one half his/her full fifty (50) percent of the teacher's budgeted salary. 5. The Board shall not be liable for death or injuries sustained by any teacher while on sabbatical leave. The full medical insurance benefits will be paid by the employee. Teachers on sabbatical leave shall be allowed credit toward retirement for time spent on such leave in accordance with the rules and regulations established by the Michigan Public School Employees Retirement Funds. Upon returning from sabbatical leave, the non-tenure eligible staff member shall be restored to placed on the same position or to a position of like nature and be placed appropriate step on the salary schedule as the non-tenure eligible staff member would have been if though he/she worked had been in active service in the district during system for the sabbatical periodyear of the sabbatical. The placement process for tenure eligible staff members sabbatical shall not affect continuity of service or accrual of seniority toward longevity benefits. 6. A sabbatical shall be governed by Board policy and corresponding administration guidelines. Provided there are enough people who qualify for sabbatical leaves and apply for such leaves, the Board may grant three (3) such leaves per year with half pay subject to the teacherrecommendation of the Superintendent and approval by the Board. Teachers Notice of approval or disapproval will be given in writing as soon as possible. 7. A teacher on sabbatical shall maintain tenure, accumulated sick leave, and all other accrued benefits provided in this agreement other than full paid insurance benefits. 8. A teacher on sabbatical shall be given the opportunity to purchase full insurance benefits at group rates. 9. A teacher granted a paid sabbatical leave will be required to sign a personal contract agreeing shall agree in writing to return to the School District school system for at least two years or reimburse the year immediately following the leave. Sabbatical leaves granted under this policy shall be subject to the following conditions: (1) Application for sabbatical leave must be submitted prior to December 1st for any leave to be taken during the succeeding school year. (2) Applications for leave shall include a description of the proposed program of study and how such study relates to the needs of the school system. It Additional information concerning the request may be required by the Sabbatical Leave Committee. (3) Applicants must have completed seven (7) years of service in the system for each sabbatical. (4) The number of professional employees on sabbatical leave at any time will be limited to one (1). The granting of a sabbatical leave will be dependent on a qualified replacement and adequate funds being available. An applicant will be notified in writing on or before May 15th whether or not his/her request for sabbatical is agreed that teacher improvement includes: attending approved and before July 21st whether a college, university or other educational institution, which qualified replacement is available. (5) Payment will improve be at the teacher's ability rate of one-half pay and one-half insurance and up to teach and taking a minimum of six (6) semester credits each semestercredit hours of course reimbursement for a full year or full pay and full insurance and up to six (6) credit hours of course reimbursement for up to one-half year. During said sabbatical leave, the teacher Stipends that are year-round shall be considered prorated accordingly. (6) An employee is assured of returning to be in the employ of said Board, shall have a contract, and shall be paid one half his/her full salary. The Board shall former position. (9) The School Committee will grant the sabbatical period. The placement process for tenure eligible staff leave based upon the recommendation of a Sabbatical Leave Committee composed as follows: (1) two members shall be governed by Board policy of the Hermon School Committee, (2) the superintendent, and corresponding administration guidelines. Provided there are enough people who qualify for sabbatical leaves and apply for such leaves, the Board may grant three (3) such leaves per year with half pay one principal, all of the above to be appointed by the teacher. Teachers granted a sabbatical leave will be required to sign a personal contract agreeing to return to chairperson of the Hermon School District for Committee, and (4) three members of the year immediately following Hermon Education Association (one elementary school, one middle school, and one high school), appointed by the leave. Failure to return to president of the School District will require the teacher to repay to the School District with interest (be determined upon granting of leave) the amount of pay they received while on leaveHermon Education Association.
