Teaching Workload. Each faculty member shall receive a provisional teaching workload for the next academic year by May 15. This provisional workload may be changed at a later date, due to unforeseen operational requirements. Assignment of teaching load to a faculty member shall be determined in a fair, equitable and transparent manner, based on the existing Department/School Teaching Standard and shall depend on relevant factors including but not limited to the following: 1. the number of different courses or course areas taught by each faculty member; 2. the number of scheduled hours per course; 3. teaching and evaluation methods, and the number of hours of preparation, grading and administration per course; 4. the expected student enrolment in each class, and the total number of students in a faculty member's classes; 5. the number of hours of academic counselling and consulting per course; 6. the degree of teaching and/or marking support provided to the faculty member teaching a given course; 7. the type (lecture, studio, placement, fieldwork, practicum, laboratory, seminar, etc.) of each course; 8. the level (introductory, upper year, graduate etc.) of each course; 9. the availability of academic assistants; 10. additional hours of preparation for a new course or substantially revised course; 11. the amount of field, clinical, research, thesis, and other academic supervision of students;

5. e. the number of hours of academic counselling and consulting per course;
6. the degree of teaching and/or marking support provided to the faculty member teaching a given course;
7. f. the type (lecture, studio, placement, fieldwork, practicum, laboratory, seminar, etc.) of each course;
8. g. the level (introductory, upper year, graduate etc.) of each course;
9. h. the availability of academic assistants;
10. i. additional hours of preparation for a new course or substantially revised course;
11. j. the amount of field, clinical, research, thesis, and other academic supervision of students;
k. supervisory responsibility for laboratory or tutorial sessions;
l. off-campus teaching; and,
m. the Faculty member's focus of workload emphasis.
2. Faculty members will teach from 6-12 academic course hours per week. An academic course hour is a fifty minute period scheduled for the instruction of students.
3. The maximum daily teaching span will be seven hours, including a meal period, except that once a week it may be eight hours including a meal period. However, by mutual agreement, the daily teaching span may be extended to ten hours to achieve a four day teaching week.
4. A Faculty member shall not be required in any academic year to teach more than one full course (one two-semester course) or two half-courses that begin at or after 6 p.m. (A course taught on a Saturday shall be deemed equivalent to an evening course as mentioned in this paragraph.)
5. Normally, a Faculty member shall be required to teach two terms out of three terms in an academic year.
6. In programs in which the Department's/School's curriculum structure and student enrolment patterns are such that the combined limits described in sections 1. d) and 2. immediately above result in a teaching workload in which fewer than 100 students are covered by the maximum of 12 academic course hours per week an ad hoc committee comprising three nominees of the ▇▇▇▇ and three nominees of the President of the Association shall meet and agree upon appropriate maxima for student contact and academic course hours for the Department/School.

Teaching Workload. Each faculty member shall receive a provisional (1) Employee teaching workload will be assigned by the Department Head so that each employee will have an equitable teaching load comparable to that of other employees in the Department. In determining an equitable teaching load, a two (2) semester time frame will be taken into consideration, based on the consecutive semesters in which the employee has teaching responsibilities. Such teaching responsibilities will take into account:
(i) class enrollment;
(ii) number of separate course preparations;
(iii) number of course sections;
(iv) number of modules and shared teaching;
(v) supervision of senior projects;
(vi) supervision of graduate students;
(vii) requirement for laboratory and tutorial participation;
(viii) provision of lab and teaching assistants;
(ix) research and other scholarly activities;
(x) committee work and service;
(xi) professional advising (internal);
(xii) new employees in their first year of appointment who are teaching a course for the next first time;
(xiii) international activities through NSAC International;
(xiv) special topic courses (a special topic course is not a regularly scheduled course; it is taught on the initiative of the employee with prior approval of the Department Head.)
(xv) development and teaching of credit, continuing and distance education courses with prior approval of the Department Head and VP Academic.
(2) With the exception of 18.02 (a) (1) (ix) and subject to Article 18.02(b), in assigning teaching workloads, no reduction in teaching workloads will occur if it requires the Employer to hire additional staff resources that are not part of the established faculty complement for the fiscal year.
(b) The standard assigned teaching workload should be no more than full teaching responsibilities for five (5) regularly scheduled courses or the equivalent per academic year. A regularly scheduled course is a course assigned to the employee by the Department Head with the approval of the Vice President Academic.
(c) The standard teaching load for Employees will be increased to six (6) regularly scheduled courses or the equivalent per academic year by May 15depending on the demonstrated level of research, scholarly activity and service.
(d) Employees with primary responsibility for supervising two (2) or more graduate students registered at NSAC will have a workload reduction of up to one (1) course per academic year and those supervising four (4) or more graduate students registered at NSAC will have a workload reduction of up to two (2) courses per academic year during the academic year in which the students are registered and actively engaged in the first two (2) years of their MSc program. This provisional Senior projects will be assigned equitably to employees within an academic Department relative to overall teaching load and student interest. The employee will be available to assist students as required. Employee teaching workload shall normally be assigned between the hours of 0800 and 1830. An employee may be changed at assigned a later date, due to unforeseen operational requirements. Faculty members shall be provided their teaching schedule workload after 1830 hours but the teaching day will not less than extend beyond ten (10) weeks prior to hours. The employee’s teaching workload may include the commencement teaching of “regularly scheduled courses” within the employee=s professional competence, outside of the term. In the event of previously unforeseen circumstances this schedule may be changed before the commencement of the term.
