In 2005 a strategic agreement was reached between Hamilton City Council and Waikato District Council to transfer approximately 822ha of land from the Waikato District to Hamilton City. The Local Government Act order which put in place the transfer referred to this land as “R1”. On 1 July 2011this land became part of Hamilton City.
