Effective July 1, 2013, Sign Language Interpreters will be evaluated using the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) pursuant to OAR 581-015-2035 and/or the District’s evaluation form.

During the first year of employment, an Educational Interpreter must obtain and submit to the Human Resources Office by May 30th a proficiency score of at least three (3.0) on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA).
The District will pay the tuition cost for the current Sign Language Interpreters (who are on the payroll effective upon the date of ratification) to participate in a District-chosen, one-time intensive training in preparation for the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA).
Assessments eligible for reimbursement currently include but are not limited to the following state approved options: • Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) • Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) • Transliteration Skills Certification • Certified Rehabilitation Counselors (CRC) • Illinois Board of Evaluation of Interpreters Basic Certification (BEI) • Paraprofessional license renewal If an Employee is denied approval he/she shall be given written reasons for such denial.
Any newly hired interpreter must have met the EIPA (Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment) standard of 3.5 in both the written and performance skills assessment before being hired.
Of the eight states requiring assessment of educational interpreters’ competency, seven use the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA).
For purposes of this section, a sign language interpreter must be certified by Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), National Association of the Deaf (NAD) or Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA).
