APPRENTICE LINEMAN. The Apprentice Lineman is in training to be an Electrical Lineman in the electrical trade. During the apprentice term, the apprentice shall be provided training and experience in order to assure that upon completion of the appointment, the apprentice will posses the theoretical and practical knowledge, skill, and ability, to enter the trade and perform successfully as an electrical lineman, as detailed in the “Apprenticeship Program Handbook”. The duties of the apprentice, through work experience and job operations, is to learn theory and technical subject matter of the trade. From time to time, the employee may be required to perform other duties as required by the day-to-day operation of the City (ground worker duties, tree trimming, etc.).
APPRENTICE LINEMAN. An Employee who is engaged in performing work as an assistant to or under the general direction of a Lineman while training for Journeyman. In order to gain experience for advancement, Employee may be required to work alone or under direct supervision on jobs for which he has been trained and instructed. The Employee’s education and general qualifications must be such that Employee is considered capable of attaining Journeyman status. The Employee shall be willing to study in books provided by the Employer, attend special schools, and pass written and oral examinations. Performs such other bargaining unit work as assigned. Apprentices will be tested each six (6) months of apprenticeship period and given an opportunity to take a Journeyman test upon completion of thirty-six (36) months in the apprenticeship period. After apprentices pass the Journeyman examination, they will immediately be promoted to Journeyman if a vacancy exists. If no Journeyman vacancy exists, they will be advanced to the forty-two (42) month step of wage progression where they will remain until completion of forty- eight (48) months of apprenticeship, at which time Employee’s rate of pay will be increased to 97% of the Journeyman rate, which rate shall continue until a vacancy exists.
APPRENTICE LINEMAN. An employee who performs work as an assistant to or under the general direction of a Lineman while training for Journeyman Lineman status. May be required to work alone on jobs for which the employee has been trained or instructed. Education and general qualifications must be such that the employee is capable of attaining Journeyman status. Must possess a valid State Class A Driver's License within 12 months of appointment.

APPRENTICE LINEMAN. To be eligible to begin the apprentice program, the candidate must serve a minimum of one year as Groundman. (See Section 5.7).
APPRENTICE LINEMAN. The guidelines below are to assure the safety of the Apprentice and each employee involved in the training. They may be varied by the Journeyman to whom the Apprentice is assigned on a particular job. In all cases, variance of the guidelines will occur only following serious consideration of the abilities and progress of the Apprentice. Where such variances occur, the Journeyman will keep his supervisor informed. Under no circumstances shall an Apprentice Lineman be considered as part of the required complement of Journeymen Linemen until he has successfully completed his fifth term of the program. An Apprentice Lineman shall not be called upon to come into direct contact with high voltage equipment or conductors that are potentially alive, except under the following guidelines and under the direct supervision of a Journeyman Lineman: First month - no contact. After one month - less than 750 volts A.C. After 12 months - single phase live-line work. After 18 months - all live-line work, excluding bare hand. After 30 months - same restrictions as for Journeymen Linemen.
APPRENTICE LINEMAN. The duties of an Apprentice shall be to assist the Journeyman or Journeymen in the trade to which he/she is assigned. An Apprentice shall be permitted to use tools but he/she shall not be called upon to come into direct contact with high voltage conductors or equipment that is potentially alive, until the last six (6) months of his/her apprenticeship, and then only when assisting a Journeyman. For the purpose of this provision, the term "high voltage" shall mean alternating current potential in excess of 650 volts to ground or a direct current potential in excess of 300 volts to ground. For the latter half of his/her third year, an Apprentice shall be permitted to do the work of a Journeyman when under the direct supervision of a Journeyman.

Note 5 When working at an elevation of 26 metres (85 feet) or more above the ground on poles, bridges, towers, structures and fixtures, an employee's pay shall be computed as per the schedule and, in addition, he shall receive his regular hourly rate. In respect of towers, height will be computed using average footings of towers. Note 6 Whenever an employee is working in a spacing buggy on a conductor he shall receive payment as provided for in Wage Note 5. Note 7 Certification of First Aid Attendants shall be in compliance with the "Occupational First Aid Regulations.” First Aid Certificate holders will be required to upgrade their Certificates upon expiry. Certificate holders shall be paid as follows: Level I Certificate Training to be paid for and provided by the Employer. Level II Certificate - $50.00 per two week pay period. Level III Certificate - $60.00 per two week pay period. Where the Employer requires Level II and Level III Certificates, training costs shall be borne by the Employer. Note 8 Employees shall be paid every second Friday at 8:00 a.m. or as soon thereafter as possible, it being understood that the Employer may hold back not more than one (1) week's pay. If the regular payday falls on a holiday, employees shall be paid, if practicable, on the preceding working day. Note 9 When an employee resigns or is terminated for any reason while in the field, he shall be paid for all time worked, plus travelling time and travelling expenses to his regular headquarters or point of hiring, whichever may apply.
