Deprivation. There are eight data zones in Midlothian within the 20% most deprived areas of Scotland; with 4 of these in the most deprived 15%. There is one data zone in Midlothian that falls into the most deprived 15% for health deprivation. The most health-deprived areas are Woodburn, Dalkeith and ▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇. Further analysis is needed to determine whether there is a higher incidence of disability and age-related need in these areas. Scotland's drink problem is significantly worse than the rest of the UK. Alcohol consumption across the country has increased by 19 per cent since 1980 and as consumption has increased, so has alcohol related harm. Drug misuse is a priority for a number of agencies throughout the Midlothian area and has direct links to crime and social deprivation. It is estimated that a quarter of new individual patients reported to the Scottish Drug Misuse Database in Midlothian are living in households with dependent children. The estimated cost to Midlothian in terms of crime; social care; loss of productivity; health; accidents etc is in the region of £27 million per annum.
