Higher Duties Allowance Clause Samples

Typically, this allowance is paid when an employee covers for a supervisor or takes on extra responsibilities beyond their normal job description for a specified period. a. The employer shall approve payment of a higher duties allowance to an employee who is required to undertake the full duties and responsibilities of a higher graded position during the temporary absence of the occupant of that position, and who competently discharges those higher duties. Payment at a lesser rate shall be approved for an employee who is required to undertake only some of the duties and responsibilities of positions at a higher level.
b. The rate of the allowance will be calculated by taking the difference between the salary of the employee acting in the position and the minimum salary rate of the level of the higher position, or by paying an amount of 6 ½ percent of the salary of the employee acting in the position, whichever is the greater amount. Where the payment of the full rate of the allowance is not justified, the rate is to be that proportion of the full allowance that the duties and responsibilities, competently performed, bear to the whole of the higher duties and responsibilities.

Payment of the allowance will be backdated to include the previous five days. These conditions must be met on each occasion that the higher duties are performed.
