It also contains uncommon elements such as old eastern hemlock and white pine. The site will be managed to promote the development of long-lived tolerant hardwood and mixed wood Acadian forest, and the wildlife associated with these upland and riparian habitats. Site management will allow for active living and education, while recognizing the need for protection of the natural environment. This may include trail development or maintenance for walking, mountain-biking and angling predominantly on existing infrastructure. Property 116228 directly abuts the ▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇ Woodlot Natural Area. The 175 acre (70.8 ha) property is almost entirely wooded. Roughly 80 acres is hardwood dominated while the remainder includes coniferous and mixed woodlands. The western edge shows more effects of human use where the woodland is dominated by 14 metre white spruce (Picea glauca) stands. The 17 metre high hardwood stands further east abutting “the ▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇” are dominated by red maple (Acer rubrum) and white birch (Betula papyrifera) as a result of patch cuts and retain Acadian forest elements of mature yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis) and sugar maple (Acer sacchaarum) and there is beech (Fagus americana) regeneration throughout. The well-developed understory is an added bonus for wildlife. Property 539784 is also adjacent to the ▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇ Woodlot where 18 metre tall red maple, sugar maple and yellow birch are present on the eastern portion of the property. The western portion of the property has a 6.9 ha red pine (Pinus resinosa) and white pine (Pinus stobus) plantation established in 1988 and a 5.7 ha stand of mature white spruce. A small headwater stream that flows into Big Pond passes through the Properties. This stream, that divides the properties into the eastern and western portions, adds diversity to the area. Older trees of balsam fir (Abies balsamea), sugar maple and yellow birch are good substrates for mosses and lichens typical of older growth forests, and it is expected that some rare vascular plants are also present. Protection will confer better future habitats for woodland plants.
