Mitigating Vapor Intrusion in Existing Buildings. In the event that vapor intrusion mitigation is required for an existing building, active SSD, continuous PPV, or active SMD can be considered for mitigation. The design guidance sources listed in Section 5.1.3.1 describes methods of retrofitting buildings with active SSD and SMD systems. There are existing buildings at the Site that have been constructed with basements. These buildings will be inspected for potential openings directly to groundwater, such as sumps. Any such openings directly to groundwater will be sealed and ventilated to prevent vapor migration from the groundwater into the building.
