ORIENTATION AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT. 11.01 Employees shall have the opportunity for professional growth through programs designed to assist the individual to function more effectively. These shall include: (a) Orientation programs shall be developed for all new employees and prior to any employee assuming responsibility for a program. (b) The Employer shall provide all employees the opportunity to participate in Education and Professional Development. Allocation of requests will be considered equitably amongst all employees, however, final decisions will be made at the discretion of the immediate supervisor and within available resources. (c) The Professional Development System will be used on the first anniversary of employment and thereafter bi-annually with supervisory input. The employee may choose to complete a peer review of the PDS annually. Employees shall be given copies of all evaluations after they have been appropriately signed. (d) Attendance for employees who are members at professional meetings (for example, RNAO and CNA) for at least one (1) day without loss of regular salary provided that it does not unreasonably interfere with the efficient operation of the Access Centre, at the discretion of the immediate supervisor. The maximum number of employees absent for any one (1) period for this purpose shall not exceed two (2) per office. (e) Leave of absence without loss of regular pay to allow an employee to write the required examination on completion of a course of study relevant to the profession if approved by the immediate supervisor. (f) Leave of absence from regular duties without loss of regular pay, fees, travel allowance as set out in Article 17, accommodation, and a meal allowance up to fifty dollars ($50.00) per day for short courses and workshops approved by the immediate supervisor may be allowed. The number of employees and the selection of employees allowed to attend to be at the discretion of the immediate supervisor. The maximum reimbursement for meals is $10 for breakfast, $15 for lunch, and $25 for dinner. A detailed receipt must accompany the expense claim. (g) In 11.01 (d), (e) and (f) above, there shall be no overtime payable and no pay for time spent travelling. However, where the Employer requires the employee to attend, she/he shall be paid at her/his straight time hourly rate for all time spent in attendance as per course curriculum. Travelling time outside the employee’s normally scheduled time will be taken in compensating time off. The Employer shall also compensate the employee for all mileage in accordance with the Employer's current transportation policy. (h) Information concerning relevant courses and workshops pertaining to any aspect of nursing shall be posted as far in advance as possible, so that employees may make application for leave.

The Employer shall not reassign to persons outside the bargaining unit work performed by members of the bargaining unit if it causes or results in the layoff of members of the bargaining unit.
