Other Expectations. If your application is funded, you will be expected to develop a behavioral health disparities impact statement no later than 60 days after your award. (See PART II: Appendix E, Addressing Behavioral Health Disparities.) Although people with behavioral health conditions represent about 25 percent of the U.S. adult population, these individuals account for nearly 40 percent3 of all cigarettes smoked and can experience serious health consequences4. A growing body of research shows that quitting smoking can improve mental health and addiction recovery outcomes. Research shows that many smokers with behavioral health conditions want to quit, can quit, and benefit from proven smoking cessation treatments. SAMHSA strongly encourages all grantees to adopt a tobacco-free facility/grounds policy and to promote abstinence from all tobacco products (except in regard to accepted tribal traditions and practices). ▇▇▇▇▇▇ encourages all grantees to address the behavioral health needs of returning veterans and their families in designing and developing their programs and to consider prioritizing this population for services, where appropriate. SAMHSA will encourage its grantees to utilize and provide technical assistance regarding locally-customized web portals that assist veterans and their families with finding behavioral health treatment and support.
