PIPE AND FITTINGS Clause Samples
The PIPE AND FITTINGS clause defines the standards and requirements for all pipes and fittings used in a project. It typically specifies the types of materials, dimensions, and quality certifications that must be met, and may require that all components are compatible and suitable for their intended use. This clause ensures that only approved and reliable piping materials are installed, thereby reducing the risk of system failures and ensuring compliance with safety and performance standards.
PIPE AND FITTINGS. A. Furnish all pipe and fittings required for the HVAC systems, including chilled water supply, chilled water return, drain (D), and cold-water make-up piping.
B. All mechanical room chilled water supply, and chilled water return (piping 2-1/2" and larger shall be Schedule 40 seamless black steel pipe and shall conform to ANSI B-36.10 and ASTM A-53, grade A or B with Schedule 40 seamless steel welding fittings. All piping 2" and below shall be Type L hard drawn copper, ASTM B88 with 95/5 solder fittings.
C. Unions for use with steel piping shall be 300-pound malleable iron, ground joint, or 2,000- pound forged steel, 600 psi WOG, sweat or thread end as required. Unions for copper pipe shall be bronze, ground joint, 600 psi WOG, sweat or thread end as required.
D. Provide dielectric unions at all connections of dissimilar metals. Dielectric unions shall be factory certified to withstand a minimum of 600 volts on a dry line with no flashover, rated 250 psig and conforming to ANSI B16.39. Dielectric union and flange pipe threads shall conform to ANSI B2.1.
E. All buried chilled water piping shall be typical of XTRU-THERM as manufactured by PERMA-PIPE.
1. All straight sections, fittings, anchors and other accessories shall be factory fabricated, insulated, and jacketed. The piping system layout shall be analyzed by the piping system manufacturer to determine the stresses and displacements of the service pipe. The piping system design and manufacture shall be in strict conformance with ASME B31.1, latest edition. Installation of the piping system shall be in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Factory trained field technical assistance shall be provided for critical periods of installation, unloading, field joint instruction and testing.
2. The service pipe shall be standard weight ASTM A53 Grade B ERW carbon steel. All joints shall be butt-welded for 2 1/2" and larger.
3. Elbows, tees, reducers, anchors, field joints, and end seals shall be designed and factory fabricated to prevent the ingress of moisture into the system
4. The service pipe insulation shall be polyurethane foam with 2.0 Lbs./Ft.2 minimum density, 90% minimum closed cell content and initial thermal conductivity of 0.16 Btu in./Hr.
PIPE AND FITTINGS. Sprinkler pipe and fittings shall be inspected annually from the floor level.
PIPE AND FITTINGS. A. Above Ground Standpipe Piping:
1. Black carbon steel pipe meeting ASTM A-135, A-795, or A53. Provide Grade A where flanging or bending of piping is required. Piping shall be UL listed, FM approved and designed to withstand a working pressure of not less than 175 psi. All pipe shall have a Corrosion Resistance Ratio, (CRR) of 1.00 or greater, per UL listings. Pipes and fittings located at the exterior of the building and exposed to weather, and drain piping, shall be “hot-dip” galvanized in accordance with ASTM A- 123 zinc coating specifications.
a. Piping 2" and smaller: Schedule 40 with cast iron threaded fittings, Class 125, 175 psig rated working pressure, ANSI B16.4, or malleable iron threaded fitting, Class 150, 300 psig rated working pressure, ANSI B16.3.
PIPE AND FITTINGS. 1. Pipe sizes shall conform to those shown on the drawings. No substitutions of smaller pipe sizes will be permitted, but substitutions of larger size may be approved. All pipe damaged or rejected because of defects shall be removed from the site at the time of said rejection.
2. Provide pipe continuously and permanently marked with manufacturer's name or trademark, size schedule and type of pipe, working pressure at 73 degrees F. and National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) approval.
3. All mainline piping and underground piping under continuous pressure plus all pipe 2-1/2" whether a lateral or mainline, shall be rigid, unplasticized polyvinyl chloride pipe extruded from virgin parent material, ASTM D 2241. Provide pipe homogeneous throughout and free from visible cracks, holes, foreign materials, blisters, wrinkles and dents.
4. Pipe 2-1/2" diameter and under shall be SDR 21, Class 200.
5. Pipe 3" diameter and larger shall be SDR 26, Class 160.
6. Pipe 2-1/2" and larger shall be ring-tight type with push on joint having integral bell end and rubber gasket. Pipe 2" and smaller shall be solvent weld type.
7. PVC pipe fittings for sizes 3" and larger shall be constructed of PVC with gasketed joints for PVC with a minimum working pressure of 200 PSI, PVC pipe fittings for sizes 2-1/2" and smaller shall be ASTM 02466 schedule 40 PVC molded fittings suitable for solvent weld or slip joint ring tight seal. All threaded PVC pipe fittings shall be ASTM D2467, Schedule 80 PVC.
8. Size slip fitting socket taper to permit a dry un-softened pipe end to be inserted no more than halfway into the socket. Saddle and cross fittings are not permitted. Use male adapters for plastic to metal connections. Hand-tighten male adapters plus one turn with a strap wrench.
9. All pipe downstream from zone valves, sized 2" and smaller, shall be flexible nontoxic polyethylene pipe. Polyethylene pipe shall be ASTM rated at 100 PSI minimum working pressure, and in conformance with ASTM 2239, NSF approved. Pipe larger than 2" size shall be PSI as specified for mainlines, PE 2306 fittings for polyethylene pipe shall be ASTM D2609 insert type fittings. Saddle and cross fittings not permitted. All joints shall be secured with stainless steel band and screw clamps.
10. Primer and solvent for use with PVC pipe to conform to ASTM D2564. Primer to be purple in color. Solvent to be appropriate for pipe and fitting type and weather conditions.

PIPE AND FITTINGS. 1 Polyethylene pressure pipe: PE4710 DR 21 in diameters and lengths as indicated on the drawings. Pipe joints to be thermal butt fused to ASTM D 2657.
PIPE AND FITTINGS. A. The installation and backfilling of all pipe, fittings and other related items for water spray features after the activator shall be installed and tested in conformance with the requirements set forth in these specifications. Pipe shall be set with a minimum cover of 24” above the invert of the pipe. All pipe shall be pitched to drain by gravity back to the equipment vault.
B. Pour all concrete foundations and footings to the dimensions indicated on the attached manufacturer’s details.
C. Install all manufactured items in strict conformance with the requirements of the manufacturer and as required by the Owner Representative.
PIPE AND FITTINGS. A. Mainline Pipe and Fittings:
1. Use rigid, unplasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC) 1120, 1220 National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) approved pipe, extruded from material meeting the requirements of Cell Classification 12454-A or 12454-B, ASTM Standard D1784, with an integral belled end.
2. Use Class 200, SDR-21, rated at 200 PSI, conforming to the dimensions and tolerances established by ASTM Standard D2241. Use PVC pipe rated at higher pressures than Class 200 in the case of small nominal diameters that are not manufactured in Class 200.
3. Use rubber-gasketed pipe equipped with factory installed reinforced gaskets for mainline pipe with a nominal diameter greater than or equal to 3-inches. Use lubricant approved by the pipe manufacturer. Use gasketed pipe equipped with ▇▇▇▇▇▇ Gasket System. Pipe fittings may use standard gaskets
4. Use solvent weld pipe for mainline pipe with a nominal diameter less than 3-inches or where a pipe connection occurs in a sleeve. Use Schedule 80, Type 1, PVC solvent weld fittings conforming to ASTM Standards D2466 and D1784. Use primer approved by the pipe manufacturer. Solvent cement to conform to ASTM Standard D2564.
B. Lateral Pipe and Fittings:
1. Use rigid, unplasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC) 1120, 1220 National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) approved pipe, extruded from material meeting the requirements of Cell Classification 12454-A or 12454-B, ASTM Standard D1784, with an integral belled end suitable for solvent welding.
2. Use Class 200, SDR-21, rated at 200 PSI, conforming to the dimensions and tolerances established by ASTM Standard D2241. Use PVC pipe rated at higher pressures than Class 200 in the case of small nominal diameters which are not manufactured in Class 200. Use UV radiation resistant Schedule 40, Type 1, PVC solvent weld fittings conforming to ASTM Standards D2466 and D1784 for PVC pipe.
3. Use primer approved by the pipe manufacturer. Solvent cement to conform to ASTM Standard D2564, of a type approved by the pipe manufacturer.
4. For drip irrigation laterals downstream of zone control valves, use UV radiation resistant polyethylene pipe manufactured from Prime Union Carbide G-resin 7510 Natural 7 manufactured by Union Carbide or a Union Carbide Licensee with a minimum of 2% carbon black, and minimum nominal pipe ID dimension of 0.810" for 3/4 inch pipe. Use PVC /compression line fittings compatible with the drip lateral pipe. Use tubing stakes to hold above-ground pipe in place.
C. Specialized Pipe...
PIPE AND FITTINGS. A. Pipe shall be black steel meeting ANSI/UL 852 Metallic Sprinkler Pipe for Fire Protection Service, FM-1630, ASTM A795, ASTM A-135 or ASTM A-53. All pipe less than Schedule 40 shall meet ASTM A-135. All pipe 1-1/4" and smaller shall be Schedule 40. All pipe lighter than Schedule 30 shall be all be UL listed and FM approved and shall be joined by welding or Victaulic roll grooved couplings only (no threaded joints). Acceptable manufacturers are: Youngstown Tube Co., Allied Tube and Conduit, Wheatland Tube Co., Northwest Pipe Company, Tex-Tube Company, and Bull Moose Tube Company.
B. Malleable iron threaded fittings: material shall conform to ASTM A197, dimensions shall conform to ASME B16.3, NPT threads shall conform to ASME B1.20.1 and rated to 300# WSP. Acceptable manufacturers are Anvil ("SPF"), Allied Rubber & Gasket Co. (ARGCO), Sigma, ▇▇▇▇▇-▇▇▇▇▇▇ ("SCI"), Tyco, ▇▇▇▇ Manufacturing LLC, or approved equivalent.
C. Ductile iron threaded fittings: castings shall conform to ASTM A536, dimensions shall conform to ASME B16.3, NPT threads shall conform to ASME B1.20.1 and rated to 300# WSP. Acceptable manufacturers are ▇▇▇▇▇-▇▇▇▇▇▇ ("SCI"), AnvilStar ("SPF"), Allied Rubber & Gasket Co. (ARGCO), Sigma, Tyco, or approved equivalent.
D. Cast iron threaded fittings: shall be U.L. Listed and FM approved for 300 psi service. ▇▇▇▇ iron per ASTM A126 class B. Dimensions conform to ANSI B16.4 class 125 (plugs and bushings conform to ASME B16.14) and rated to 125# WSP. NPT threads per ANSI/ASME B1.
20.1. Acceptable manufacturers are ▇▇▇▇▇-▇▇▇▇▇▇, Star, AnvilStar, Sigma, ▇▇▇▇ Manufacturing LLC, or approved equivalent.
PIPE AND FITTINGS. Ductile Iron pipe shall be manufactured in accordance with requirements of ANSI A21.51 / AWWA C151. Where ductile iron pipe and fittings are equipped with push-on joints, such joints shall conform to the requirements of ANSI A21.11 / AWWA C111 latest revision. Where ductile iron pipe and fittings are equipped with mechanical joints, such joints shall conform to the requirements of ANSI A21.11 / AWWA C111 latest revision. All pipe and fittings shall be furnished new from the manufacturer. No recoated or reconditioned pipe will be acceptable.
