Purchase of Service Handgun. When a police officer retires in good standing into a public retirement system and with five (5) years of service with the Columbus State Police Department, they may purchase their service handgun upon retirement for one dollar ($1.00). However, if a retirement is due to a psychiatric or psychological disability, or if the member is under an administrative or criminal investigation that could result in disciplinary action or criminal charges, they cannot purchase their service handgun. The police department procedure 22.1.3 (Employee Benefits Program) outlines this process.
