SELF IMPROVEMENT. This program is not intended to restrict in any way the training and self-improvement efforts a classified employee may undertake on his own initiative. However, such training shall be considered as applicable to a Professional Growth increment only if it meets the requirements specified by this policy and implementing regulations of the Professional Growth Committee.

Participation in professional workshops is highly encouraged. Attendance and participation in parent-teacher conferences shall be mandatory unless excused by the building principal. Open houses shall be voluntary. Members of the AEA children that go to Kids Club shall not be charge an hourly fee for their children (day care services) enrolled in Kids Club. AEA members will have to pay the supply fee and registration for their children. SELF IMPROVEMENT. (a) Response shift employees may be required to perform “self improvement education” after 1600 hours during their assigned shift, when it is determined by the Chief that they have not met the established minimum proficiency standards of the Division of Fire.
(b) The amount of time the employee shall be required to participate in said “self improvement education” shall be directly related to the employee’s proficiency level deficit. This type of education is such that the employee can participate without assistance from other employees or officers. Some examples of “self improvement education” are driving apparatus, pumping apparatus, familiarization with equipment locations/operation, studying text materials (spelling, grammar, etc.).
(c) The “self improvement education” is considered to be each employee’s responsibility to initiate when they are found to be performing below department standards. This is not intended to take the place of normal training sessions held during “normal working hours”.
(d) The Fire Chief shall make the determination of what type of training shall be considered appropriate to be performed during “normal working hours”, and what type of training shall be considered appropriate for individual employees as “self improvement education” to be performed after 1600 hours during their regular assigned shift.

SELF IMPROVEMENT. 34.01 The Employer will reimburse Employees for receipted expenses up to a maximum of Seven Hundred and Fifty ($750.00) dollars annually for fitness, health, and/or well-being facility memberships (including passes or fees associated with classes, playing sports, etc.), hobbies, recreation and/or leisure activities, self-improvement, weight loss and/or nutrition programs, personal trainers, smoking cessation, and/or personal fitness/sport equipment. Expenses that could be covered under the medical, dental or health spending account should be claimed under said plans first.

Any Bargaining Unit Member Teaching Assistant who takes the appropriate testing to become “highly qualified” as provided for under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), shall have his/her fees reimbursed by the board upon presentation of receipts that such costs have been incurred. Further, such assistants shall be granted paid released time to take such tests upon requests.
