Sergeant Differential Clause Samples

The Sergeant Differential clause establishes a pay rate difference for employees holding the rank of sergeant compared to those of lower ranks. Typically, this clause specifies the percentage or dollar amount by which a sergeant’s compensation exceeds that of a patrol officer or equivalent position, ensuring that the additional responsibilities and leadership duties of sergeants are recognized financially. Its core function is to formalize and standardize the pay hierarchy within an organization, thereby promoting fairness and incentivizing advancement.
Sergeant Differential. At each equivalent step, Police Sergeants shall be paid a base salary which is at least fifteen percent (15%) higher than the base salary of Police Officers. Future salary increases will continue this fifteen percent (15%) minimum differential.

There shall be three (3) steps in the Sergeant pay scale: Step 2, being an additional four percent (4.0%) after eighteen (18) months as a Sergeant, and Step 3 an additional four (4.0%) after thirty-six (36) months as a Sergeant. This new step system will be implemented retroactively for all eligible employees on the payroll as of November 12, 2008, and current Sergeants will be placed into a new Sergeant step based upon years of service as a Sergeant at the time of implementation of this new step system.
