Shift Preference. Section 1. Shift preference Preference.
A. Shifts will be granted bid on a quarterly basis. Three (3) twenty-eight (28) day schedules will equal one quarter.
B. Shift assignments for the quarter shall be posted twenty-eight (28) days in advance of the start of said quarter and will be determined on the basis of seniority. Seniority for shift preference shall be determined as indicated in Article 29, Section 4. If seniority within can not be established via the classification as openings occurlanguage in Article 29, Section 4, and two or more supervisors have the same seniority based on their date of hire, a coin will be flipped by the Division Commander, in the presence of both supervisors, to determine who shall have the shift preference.
C. Supervisors shall submit a bid to their Division Commander at least twenty-one (21) days prior to the twenty-eight (28) day posting of shift assignments for the quarter. Any supervisor who fails to submit a timely bid, shall forfeit their shift preference for that quarter and may be assigned any shift by the Division Commander. The transfer supervisor shall also submit at this time for approval, any time off requests for the quarter that the supervisor has not previously submitted.
D. Supervisors will bid for shifts among other supervisors in the same job assignment. Job assignments include, but are not limited to the desired shift following:
1. Lieutenants assigned to Field Services Shifts.
2. Lieutenants assigned to Corrections Division Shifts.
3. Sergeants assigned to Field Services Shifts.
4. Sergeants assigned to Corrections Shifts.
E. Supervisors will be made within two (2) weeks following permitted to trade shifts or days with prior approval of Division Commander. Trading of shifts or days shall not be allowed under any circumstances where it will result in overtime compensation.
F. In the end event of emergencies or personnel shortages, the shift preference Article may be suspended and waived by the Sheriff and he may assign personnel irrespective of the current pay period after shift preference schedule for the closing length of the bidding of the job posting, provided the employee is qualified for the opening. Shift Preference. Shift A. Subject to the Company’s right to make any temporary shift transfers to not exceed twenty (20) working days’ duration, senior employees shall have preference for shift assignments as provided below. On temporary shift transfers, at the expiration of the twentieth (20th) working day the employee shall be returned to their original shift except for training purposes for employees in the Maintenance A Labor Grade, this time may be extended up to an additional ten (10) weeks.
1) An employee with at least nine (9) months of continuous service may request of their immediate supervisor, in writing, a transfer to another shift which shall be limited to their present job classification and department. The employee shall be permitted, within fifteen (15) working days following the date of their request, to displace the employee having the least amount of seniority on the shift of their preference. The employee who is being displaced shall be given five (5) working days advance notification of displacement.
2) Employees who are transferred at the direction of the Company from one shift to another will be granted on the basis of seniority within the classification as openings occurgiven five (5) working days advance notification.
▇. The ▇▇▇▇▇ transfer to the desired shift will be made within two (2) weeks following no later than the end Monday of the current pay period after workweek in which the closing of the bidding of the job postingfifteenth (15) working day falls.

All staff members within the GMS/GMM/GMA classification will be notified by a shift preference notification posting when a vacancy occurs. The staff members have five days nine (9) months from the date of their transfer to the posting shift of their preference. If an employee is transferred to notify another shift by the University via a Company, their shift preference form rights will be reinstated. If such employee was not the least senior employee on the shift from which the employee was transferred and elects within ten (10) working days to return to that they are exercising shift preference. The Union will receive a copy of completed forms and shift, the end of the notification period. Forms that are not completed and turned in within the five-day time frame will employee shall not be considered when the selection is made. When the GMS/GMM/GMA staff members have exhausted all as having exercised their shift preferences, the vacancy shall be posted preference rights as a GMAresult of such return.
F. The Company shall not be required to make shift transfers exceeding ten percent (10%) (but at least one (1) employee) of those employees in a given job classification, department and shift, who are subject to displacement during any calendar month. 57
G. Any employee may cancel their request for shift transfer at any time prior to their notification of shift transfer by the Company. Such cancellation must be made in accordance with writing to their Supervisor and signed by the contract languagerequesting employee. An Cancellation of a request for shift transfer will prohibit that employee selected to fill a GMA vacancy may be assigned to work with a GMM, GMS, or other specialist on alternate shifts from submitting any further request for a period not to exceed thirty shift transfer for six (306) days. Shift Preference. Shift preference 19.01 The process of shift bidding will take place during a three week period, starting from a date one month after the ratification of this contract. At this time, employees shall submit their preferences for shift allocation for the duration of this agreement in writing to the HR department. A form will be granted on the basis of provided for this purpose.
19.02 Plant seniority within the posted job classification as openings occur. The transfer shall be the determining factor in assigning individuals to the desired shifts.
19.03 All shift will transfers shall be made within two (2) weeks on the third Monday following the end close of the current pay bid period after described in 19.01 above.

19.06 All employees off work at the time the vacancy occurs. The method of filling the vacancies by a GMS/GMM/GMA shall be by shift preference. In all cases, it will be the sole responsibility of the affected employee to obtain and submit the form on a timely basis. Shift vacancies created by illness, WCB, or LOA will be filled by offering temporary shift assignment to the most senior employee in that classification on other shifts.
19.07 Postings for vacant jobs will include details regarding the shift on which the opening exists.
19.08 All employees holding posted jobs (except training or replacement positions) who do not submit a bid for shift preference during the open period shall be assigned as needed. Employees will be provided a dated and signed copy of their completed bid shift as proof of submission.
19.09 Request for shift trading must in all cases be approved by the department supervisor or his representative. Management will not unreasonably withhold permission; employees may be allowed to trade a maximum of ten shifts in a calendar month. Exceptions will be considered on a case by case basis. Any further requests for an extension to the trading will be offered by seniority to the senior employee in that classification on the required shift. Shift trading shall not be permitted when such trade creates the need for overtime payment. Employees who are laid off or who lose overtime opportunities as a vacancy occursresult of shift trading shall not have recourse to the grievance procedure. The staff members have five days from Company reserves the date right to revoke the shift trading program at any time, should it become problematic or interfere with the smooth and efficient operation of the posting plant.
19.10 It is understood that employees absent for any reason will be solely responsible for ascertaining their proper shift and work assignment prior to notify their return.
19.11 For the University via purposes of this collective agreement, "department" or "areas" are defined as follows: - Extruded Processing - Potato Chip Processing - Tortilla Processing - Packaging - Shipping / Receiving / Carton Sort - Sanitation - Maintenance - Quality Assurance These departments will apply for purposes of overtime, layoff and vacation.
19.12 Because employees in the G/L classification currently work plant wide rather than in a specific department as outlined above: - Employees in G/L classification may bid on shift preference form that they are exercising shift preference. Any newly created AFSCME position in the Allendale or Grand Rapids Facilities Services department will first be offered to existing staff members within the department and classification at the time the vacancy occurs. This will be done using a shift preference notification posting. Staff members must sign the shift preference notification form within five (5) days from the date of the posting to be considered. The Union will receive a copy of completed forms at the end of the notification period. All staff members within the department and classification will be notified of the shift preference posting when the vacancy occurs. The employee from the highest grade with the earliest seniority date signing the notification form shall move to such shift at the beginning of the next pay period, given there are no outstanding concerns regarding attendance. If no staff member at the highest grade within the classification signs the notification form, it moves to the next highest grade to be granted on the basis of seniority and attendance. This continues through each grade level in descending order. An employee will be assigned to the posted shift at the appropriate grade pay level as their previously held grade or lower if the employee chooses to accept a position at a lower grade pay level. After all shift changes within the classification have occurred and all members of the classification have had the opportunity to bid on all options, the admin for the AVP of Facilities Services shall send an email notification to all members in the classification asking if any member is interested in the remaining shift. Members will be given 24 hours from the time stamp on the email to respond to the email expressing their interest in moving to that shift. If no response from members, the remaining shift and vacancy shall be posted internally in the Facilities Services departments (Allendale and Grand Rapids) for a period of five (5) business days.
