Species Status and Distribution. The Pahrump poolfish was listed as endangered on March 11, 1967, under the Endangered Species Preservation Act of 1966 (Service 1967). Its endangered status was retained with the passage of the Endangered Species Act in 1973. The Service approved a Recovery Plan for the species on March 17, 1980 (Service 1980). Critical habitat for the species has not been designated. To prevent the extinction of the only remaining member of the genus Empetrichthys, refuge populations were established in Nevada at Los Latos Pools on the Colorado River near Lake Mojave (Colorado River Valley) in 1970; Corn Creek Springs in the Desert National Wildlife Refuge, ▇▇▇▇▇ County (Las Vegas Valley) in 1971; and the Shoshone Ponds Natural Area (Middle Pond, North Pond, and Stock Pond) located in Spring Valley in White Pine County, Nevada in 1976; Spring Mountain Ranch State Park west of Las Vegas in ▇▇▇▇▇ County, Nevada in 1985; and Springs Preserve in Las Vegas in ▇▇▇▇▇ County, Nevada in 2017. All sites, except for Los Latos Pools, continue to serve a roll in recovery of Pahrump poolfish:  Los Latos Pools: Pahrump poolfish were introduced into the Los Latos Pools in 1970. The population was initially successful, but failed in the late 1970s due to flooding. Poolfish were not reintroduced to this location.  Corn Creek: Pahrump poolfish were introduced into Corn Creek in 1971. The population initially flourished but dwindled in the mid-1970s following the invasion of nonnative mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis). They were reintroduced in 1976, and once again flourished until the invasion of red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii). In 2014, mosquitofish and guppies were removed by the Department using rotenone. Poolfish were reintroduced in 2014 (675 poolfish) with an additional introduction occurring in 2015 (775 poolfish). An additional 40 poolfish were added in the spring of 2018. As of October 2018, the Department reported an estimate of 1,852 fish (95% CI, 1,633-2,102) inhabiting the concrete pond and outflow, 82 poolfish (95% CI, 59-119) in the North Tank, and 120 poolfish (95% CI, 94-153) in the South Tank. In 2019, within the cement pond, the Department documented the introduction of koi (Carassius rubrofuscus) or goldfish (Carassius auratus), shortfin ▇▇▇▇▇ (Poecilid mexicana), mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis), weather loach (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus), red eared slider turtles (Trachemys scripta elegans), and an unknown snail (Department 2019).
