Continuous shift work – General. Company Undertakings Regarding the Introduction of Continuous Crushing in the Mill: (a) The rationale behind the introduction of continuous crushing is that it is an economical and efficient method of processing an increased amount of cane over a time span comparable to a normal crushing season at the mill. (b) A decrease in crop size due to the effect of a natural disaster such as a drought or a cyclone may prevent a mill from utilising continuous crushing during a subsequent season. However, in any season where a continuous shift roster is commenced, it shall be worked for the duration of that season. (c) If the mill requires continuous crushing there will be no extended close down the following non-crush unless crop size is reduced significantly by some natural cause e.g. flood, cyclone, drought or the Company is affected by adverse market forces e.g. price. In these circumstances clause 5.9 of this Agreement would apply. (d) Current full-time employees at the mill would not become seasonal as a result of the introduction of continuous crushing at the mill. However, it is recognised that the ratio of seasonal to full-time employees may be altered by virtue of the fact that a fourth shift will enter the workforce of the mill with the introduction of continuous crushing. (e) The introduction of continuous shift provisions provides the mill with the additional option of continuous crushing operations. Before the mill utilises this option discussions will take place with employees and their representatives. Disputes which may arise will be dealt with using the Issues of Concern Procedure in this Agreement. 6.10.1 Weekend payments of continuous shift workers: Employees working on rostered weekend shifts involving ordinary time are to be paid at the rate of time and a half for all time worked. 6.10.2 Afternoon and night shift allowances: (a) Afternoon and night shift allowance is payable on all appropriate shifts during ordinary working hours, including rostered weekend shifts involving ordinary time. (b) The payment of shift allowance to employees working 12 hour shifts for Millaquin Mill and Bundaberg Refinery operations are made on the basis that a maximum of 16 hours in any 24 hour period will attract the relevant percentage shift allowance penalty only.
