Route Deviation Clause Samples

A Route Deviation clause defines the circumstances under which a vessel is permitted to deviate from its agreed or customary route during a voyage. This clause typically outlines acceptable reasons for deviation, such as emergencies, saving life or property at sea, or complying with legal requirements, and may specify the process for notifying relevant parties. Its core practical function is to provide legal clarity and allocate risk by establishing when a deviation is justified and does not constitute a breach of contract, thereby protecting both the carrier and cargo interests in unforeseen situations.
