Instructional Responsibilities. 6.3.1 Learning objectives, course requirements, and the testing methods and criteria to be used in grading shall be communicated to students by means of a syllabus at the beginning of each semester (or session). In accordance with Higher Learning Commission Revised Criteria for Accreditation (3.A.3), syllabuses shall be designed to ensure that “program quality and learning goals are consistent across all modes of delivery and all locations”. Syllabuses for online courses therefore shall include provisions ensuring that instructional contact and methods are equivalent in scope to comparable face-to-face courses. Copies of syllabuses shall be on file in the department office. 6.3.2 Students shall be provided timely appraisal of their own progress in each course and shall be provided an opportunity to review all written work on which they have received grades (including final exams which shall be retained by the instructor for one (1) year). 6.3.2.1 All student-initiated appeals of grades shall follow the procedure described in the Northern Michigan University Student Handbook. 6.3.3 Faculty shall meet their assigned classes at their scheduled times for the entire period and for the full length of the semester. Any change in time or location of a scheduled class must have prior approval of the department head, and the faculty member is expected to give students timely notification of the change. The work year for counselors and the Athletic Director shall be 190 days. The work year for the Agriculture teachers shall be 218 days. 6.2.2 The work day for full-time teachers will include five (5) instructional periods and one (1) preparation period. The work day for a 1.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) special education teacher or a 0.8 FTE special education teacher will include one (1) preparation period and one (1) special Education Services Period. The Special Education Services Period shall be utilized by the special education teacher to complete the necessary duties to ensure that special education services and related services are provided to the individual students on the teacher’s caseload as outlined in the student’s IEP. Duties include but are not limited to: • Developing IEP (amendments, BIP, initials, 30 day placement, etc.) • Assuring compliance with procedural requirements • Assessing/reporting progress of goals • Communicating and coordinating with parents/guardians, schools, other agencies, teachers, administrators, and between regular and special education programs • Observing students • Completing assessments • Developing and implementing modifications and accommodations • Providing transitional services (development, assessment, goals, etc.) 6.2.3 Full-time unit members shall work a school day of 450 minutes (7 1/2 hours) arriving at school at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start time. Part-time unit members’ work day will be prorated. The principal will schedule a thirty-five minute duty-free lunch break and a ten-minute nutrition break. Staff is expected to be at school at their regular time; however, if unsafe to drive and staff arrives by the time the instructional day begins there is no need to submit for personal necessity. Personal Necessity will be submitted if staff arrives after the instructional day begins or do not come to work at all. 6.2.4 All school committee meetings and staff meetings called by the principal or his/her designee and department meetings held immediately before or after the normal work hours are considered to be part of the normal work day for all employees. Instructional Responsibilities. Section 5:01 Academic Freedom (a) The Board and Federation recognize the necessity for academic freedom in the study, presentation and interpretation of facts and ideas concerning man, human society, the physical and biological world and other disciplines of learning. Employees recognize, however, that academic freedom must be balanced against their first duty which is to teach accepted and adopted curriculum and courses of study. The instruction offered should be based on fact and be free from bias. (d) The Board's endorsement of the concept of academic freedom should not be construed as permitting an employee to promote his own views of a personal, political or religious nature to the students in the classroom setting. Accordingly, employees shall not comment in the presence of students on matters involving collective bargaining disputes or grievances under this Agreement. It is understood that employees may express their own views of a personal, political or religious nature at any time outside of the classroom setting and outside of the presence of students while on the school grounds. (e) The ownership (copyright) of materials produced by employees falls into the following categories: (1) Material produced is a direct result of an assignment (such as a curriculum written to fulfill a grant) is, and shall remain, the property of the Board. (2) Material produced by an employee independent of the employee's assigned duties, wholly on the employee's own time (such as when an employee writes a novel or develops computer software) is, and shall remain, the property of the employee. Instructional Responsibilities. Excepting non-classroom faculty, the normal instructional credit-hour teaching load shall consist of fifteen (15) to seventeen (17) credit hours, or their equivalent for the Fall and Spring semesters, before entering overload status. The Summer teaching load will be from three (3) to six (6) credit hours in either Summer A or Summer B.
