The "Hours of Rest" clause sets out the minimum periods of rest that must be provided to individuals, typically employees or crew members, to ensure their well-being and compliance with labor regulations. It usually specifies the number of consecutive hours of rest required within a 24-hour period and may outline weekly rest requirements as well. For example, it might mandate at least 10 hours of rest in any 24-hour period, with certain exceptions for emergencies. Hours of Rest. After completing a shift, employees must have eight (8) consecutive hours of rest before commencing their next shift. Various work cycle arrangements may be established by mutual agreement between the proper officer of the Company and the Union. Where such agreement is reached the parties will make a joint application to the Minister of Labour in accordance with the provisions of the Canada Labour Code, if required. It is understood that the various work cycle arrangements are for the purpose of meeting the Company's operational requirements or to provide employees working long distances from home sufficient time to return home on their rest days. It is also understood that every effort will be made to avoid overtime situations on the last day of the work cycle, unless in the presence of a unavoidable operational necessity outside the supervisory personnel's control or emergency situation. NOTE: General Holidays for employees working such work cycles will be paid in with the note to Assignment of Rest Days The rest days shall be consecutive as far as is possible consistent with the establishment of regular relief assignments and the avoidance of working an employee on an assigned rest day. Preference shall be given to Saturday and Sunday, and then to Sunday and Monday, and Friday and Saturday.
