Bereavement Leave. (a) Upon the death of an employee's spouse, spouse to include same sex partner, child or stepchild, an employee shall be granted leave up to a maximum of five (5) continuous calendar days without loss of pay. One of the days of leave shall include the day of the funeral or equivalent service. Additional days off with or without pay may be granted by the Employer. Part-time employees will be credited with seniority and service for all such leave. In the event of a delayed interment or ceremony for reason of religion or other protected grounds under the Ontario Human Rights Code, an Employee may save one of the days identified above without loss of pay to attend the interment or ceremony.
(b) When a death occurs in the immediate family of an employee, the employee shall be granted leave up to a maximum of three (3) continuous calendar days without loss of pay around the date of the funeral or equivalent service provided that the employee must be regularly scheduled to work such days to receive pay.
(c) Immediate family shall be defined as parent, step-parent, father-in-law, mother-in-law, brother, sister, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, daughter-in- law, son-in-law, legal guardian, grandmother, grandfather, and grandchildren.
(d) An employee shall be granted one (1) day bereavement leave without loss of pay to attend the funeral, or if there is no funeral, an equivalent service for his or her aunt or uncle, niece or nephew. Where there is a funeral but the employee cannot attend by reason of religion or other protected grounds under the Ontario Human Rights Code, the employee shall be granted one (1) day bereavement leave without loss of pay to attend an equivalent service within a week following the funeral.
(e) An employee will not be eligible to receive payment for any period in which she is receiving any other payments. For example, holiday pay or sick pay.
(f) Where it is necessary, with as much notice as possible, the employee may apply for personal leave of absence in addition to bereavement leave. Permission for such leave shall not be unreasonably withheld.
Bereavement Leave. Immediate Family is defined in Article 4.07 and repeated here for convenience: includes the Nurse’s father, mother, step-mother, step-father, guardian, brother, sister, step-brother, step-sister, spouse, child, father-in-law, mother-in-law, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, step child, or ▇▇▇▇ of the Nurse, grandparent, step-grandparent or grandchild or step-grandchild of the Nurse and a relative permanently residing in the Nurse’s household or with whom the Nurse permanently resides. The “in-law” and “step-relative” relationships referred to in this provision will only be considered “immediate family” in cases where it is a current relationship at the time of the benefit is claimed.
(a) If a death occurs in the Nurse’s Immediate Family on a day when the Nurse is at work or scheduled to work, then said Nurse shall be granted bereavement leave with pay for her or his scheduled shift or the remainder of the scheduled shift.
(b) The Full-Time Nurse shall also be granted seven (7) calendar days leave of absence effective midnight following the death and shall be paid for all shifts the Nurse is scheduled to work during the seven (7) calendar day period. In any event, the Nurse shall be entitled to thirty seven and one- half (37.5) consecutive hours paid leave even if this extends past the seven (7) calendar days leave.
(c) A Part-Time Nurse who has a death in her or his immediate family shall receive seven (7) calendar days leave pursuant to Article 9.04, however, the minimum hours of paid leave shall be pro-rated based on the Part- Time Nurse’s regular hours paid in the previous fiscal year of the Employer or their current appointment status, whichever is greater. Part- Time Nurses in their first year of employment shall have the minimum hours of paid leave pro-rated on their appointment status as a percentage of equivalent full-time hours. All other bereavement leaves pursuant to Article 9.04 shall not be pro-rated.
(d) Every Nurse shall be entitled to leave with pay up to a maximum of one (1) day in the event of death of the Nurse’s brother-in-law or sister-in-law, and may be granted up to two (2) days for travel for purposes of attending the funeral and shall be paid for those travel days which are not regularly scheduled days of rest.
(e) Every Nurse shall be entitled to one (1) day leave without pay, for the purpose of attending the funeral of a Nurse’s aunt or uncle, niece or nephew, or the grandparents of the spouse of the Nurse.

Bereavement Leave. A permanent employee or a probationary permanent employee shall be granted time off with pay, at the regular rate of pay, for the position to which such employee is permanently appointed or serving a required trial term thereof, for the purpose of making arrangements for, or attending, a funeral in accordance with the following:
(a) When death occurs in the employee's immediate family - that is, current spouse, common-law spouse, parent, child or ▇▇▇▇. The employee on request, shall be excused for any five (5) regularly scheduled consecutive working days without loss of pay at their regular rate of pay. Such leave shall extend past the day of the funeral if there are extenuating circumstances for the leave. However, in no event shall such leave exceed five (5) working days.
(b) For other members of the employee’s immediate family that is, grandparent, grandchild, guardian, parent of current spouse, brother, sister, brother in law, sister in law, son in law, daughter in law, niece, nephew, grandparent of current spouse or related dependent of employee. The employee on request, shall be excused for any three (3) regularly scheduled working days without loss of pay at their regular rate of pay, such leave shall be extended past the day of the funeral if there are extenuating circumstances for the leave. However, in no event shall such leave exceed three (3) working days.
(c) One-half (1/2) day's leave with pay to attend funeral services of co-workers and persons related more distantly than those listed in Article 17.01.03 (a) and (b) shall be granted upon request. Upon demonstrating the need for additional time due to extenuating circumstances, this leave shall be extended up to one (1) day.
(d) The term "extenuating circumstances" may include traveling time or other reasons which may be applicable to the individual circumstances. The Foundation will review on a case by case basis to determine additional approved leave.
(e) A permanent or probationary permanent employee on leave of absence, other than annual vacation leave, shall not be eligible for bereavement leave.
Bereavement Leave. Any employee who notifies the Hospital as soon as possible following bereavement will be granted bereavement leave for four (4) consecutive working days off without loss of regular pay from regularly scheduled hours in conjunction with the death of the spouse, child, or parent. Any employee who notifies the Hospital as soon as possible following a bereavement will be granted bereavement leave for three (3) consecutive working days off without loss of regular pay from regularly scheduled hours in conjunction with the death of the sister, brother, mother-in-law, father-in-law, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, grandparent, grandchild, brother-in-law, sister-in-law or grandparent of spouse. An employee shall be granted one (1) day bereavement leave without loss of regular pay from regularly scheduled hours to attend the funeral of his or her aunt or uncle, niece or nephew. The Hospital, in its discretion, may extend such leave with or without pay. Where an employee does not qualify under the above-noted conditions, the Hospital may, nonetheless, grant a paid bereavement leave. For the purpose of bereavement leave, the relationships specified in the preceding clause are deemed to include a common-law spouse and a partner of the same sex.
Bereavement Leave. 11.9.1 Upon request, a Unit Member shall be granted bereavement leave for the death of the Unit Member’s immediate family.
11.9.2 As per Education Code 44985, members of the immediate family, as used in this section, means the mother, mother-in-law, father, father-in-law, grandmother, grandmother-in-law, grandfather, grandfather-in-law, grandchild, spouse, son, son-in-law, daughter, daughter-in-law, brother or sister of the employee, step or ▇▇▇▇▇▇ relation of the employee or any relative living in the immediate household of the employee.
11.9.3 Every Unit Member shall be entitled to one (1) day leave of absence on account of the death of a brother-in-law or sister-in-law. No deduction shall be made from the salary of such employee, nor shall such leave be deducted from leave granted by other sections of the Education Code.
11.9.4 Unit Members shall be granted necessary leave of absence, not to exceed four days, or five days if out-of-state travel is required, on account of the death of any member of his/her immediate family. No deduction shall be made from the salary of such employee nor shall such leave be deducted from leave granted by other sections of this code. A Unit Member may take bereavement leave in one day increments, not to exceed four working days or five working days if out-of-state travel is required for any one bereavement occasion. The one day increments of bereavement leave need not be consecutive, but must be taken within thirty (30) calendar days of the first request for bereavement leave.
11.9.5 When additional time is requested after “bereavement leave” has been exhausted or when the deceased is not an immediate family member, then Personal Necessity may be used.
Bereavement Leave. An Employee shall be granted five (5) regularly scheduled consecutive work days bereavement leave, without loss of pay or benefits, on the death of a spouse, common-law spouse, same sex partner, a parent, step parent, adopted or ▇▇▇▇▇▇ parent of the employee or the employee’s spouse, a child, step-child, or ▇▇▇▇▇▇ child of the employee or the employee’s spouse, a grandparent, step grandparent, grandchild or step grandchild of the employee or of the employee’s spouse, the spouse of a child, the employee’s brother or sister, the employee’s parent-in-law, son- in-law, daughter-in-law, brother-in-law, or sister-in-law. Such bereavement leave shall be taken at the time of that bereavement or at the time the Employee received notification of such bereavement. Proof of bereavement may be required by the Director of Labour Relations or designate. The definition of immediate family shall be deemed to apply equally to Employees engaged in a common-law relationship that are deemed to be spouses pursuant to the Family Law Reform Act, as amended. Where the burial occurs outside the Province, reasonable travelling time up to five (5) additional working days without pay may be granted at the discretion of the Employee’s Department Head. In order to receive the paid leave provided for in this Clause, absence must result in loss of time and pay from a regular shift and the Employee must have worked the day before or the day after, provided that an Employee granted leave without pay for compassionate purposes within fourteen (14) calendar days prior to death shall not lose benefits under this Clause. One Employee designated by the President of Local 5167 (or their alternate) from time to time shall be granted one (1) day off with pay for the purpose of attending the funeral of a member of Local 5167 or a retired member of Local 5167.

Bereavement Leave. A nurse who notifies the Hospital as soon as possible following a bereavement shall be granted three (3) consecutive working days off without loss of regular pay for scheduled hours, in conjunction with the day of the funeral of a member of her or his immediate family. "Immediate family" means parent, brother, sister, spouse, son, daughter, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, mother-in-law, father-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, grandparent, grandparent of spouse or grandchild. A nurse shall be granted one (1) day bereavement leave without loss of regular earnings to attend the funeral of, or a memorial service (or equivalent) for her or his aunt, uncle, niece or nephew. "
Bereavement Leave. 10.6.1 A department head or designee shall authorize bereavement leave with pay for a full-time State employee due to the death of his/her parent, stepparent, spouse, child, stepchild, or death of any person residing in the immediate household of the employee at the time of death. An intervening period of absence for medical reasons shall not be disqualifying when, immediately prior to the absence, the person resided in the household of the employee. Such bereavement leave shall be authorized for up to one duty shift per occurrence. The employee shall give notice to his/her immediate supervisor as soon as possible and shall, if requested by the employee's supervisor, provide substantiation to support the request upon the employee's return to work.
10.6.2 A department head or designee shall authorize bereavement leave with pay for a full-time employee due to the death of grandchild, grandparent, brother, sister, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, mother-in-law, father-in-law, daughter-in-law, son-in- law, sister-in-law, or brother-in-law. Such bereavement leave shall be authorized for up to one duty shift in a fiscal year. The employee shall give notice to his/her immediate supervisor as soon as possible and shall, if requested by the employee's supervisor, provide substantiation to support the request.
10.6.3 If the death of a person as described above requires the employee to travel over 400 miles one way from his/her home, additional time off with pay shall be granted for two (2) additional days which shall be deducted from accrued sick leave, annual leave, vacation, or CTO. Should additional leave be necessary, the department head or designee may authorize the use of other existing leave credits or authorized leave without pay.
